Interfacing a SAW oscillator to a FPGA transceiver reference clock input

 Design point

 Example of board layout design

Please note the following design point when you connect our SAW oscillator and Xilinx FPGA.


[1] Provide AC coupling between the oscillator output pins and the dedicated clock input pins.

<Effect>

DC current is blocked between the oscillator and the FPGA clock input pins.
Power consumption of both parts is reduced.
The AC coupling capacitor forms a high-pass filter with the on-chip termination that attenuates a wander of the reference clock.

[2] Provide a dedicated point-to-point connection between the oscillator and clock input pins.

[3]Keep impedance discontinuities on the differential transmission lines to a minimum.
   Design the two output lines by differential impedance 100 ohm.

[4] Keep two transmission lines to same length and width.

<Effect>

    Common-mode noise is absorbed and rejected, when the phase difference between two signals is kept 180 degrees.

Example of board layout design (2 layers, 2nd layer is all GND pattern)

*Please design transmission lines to connect FPGA to SAW oscillator and board thickness to GND so that differential impedance becomes 100 ohm.

*As for the Virtex FPGA reference clock input, LVDS terminal resistance is unnecessary outside so that terminal resistance is built in it.
